April 22, 2021 — Insurmountable is a roguelike exploration game with permadeath in which players must overcome enormous mountains. The procedurally created mountain areas ensure no two climbs are ever the same. In Insurmountable, players face snowstorms and the sheer force of nature and are forced to always keep their eyes on the summit to overcome the highest mountain peaks. Three player characters are available, each with different skills and background stories that impact the experience quite seriously, in essence, offering players three different experiences in the same game.

“Areas must be explored thoroughly as it is an absolute necessity to find equipment in the hopes [fictional] past adventurers have left items behind that might help players make it to the top — and survive.”

Unforgiving Game Design

Players start out with the primary mission to survive the climb of a challenging mountain, the difficulty is quite high from the get-go, and although the world of Insurmountable looks like a simulation-type game grounded in reality, looks deceive. Eerie caves and fantastical ancient ruins are scattered around the procedural mountain terrains. Areas must be explored thoroughly as it is an absolute necessity to find equipment in the hopes [fictional] past adventurers have left items behind that might help players make it through to the top — and survive in the process.

In the course of each of the three mystery stories, players encounter dangerous animals, overcome deep and dark abysses, tackle both sinister and well-meaning characters (who are not always human.) Each decision sets the stage for game events to follow.

Permadeath and Meta Goals

To sum up, three mountains have to be conquered. One of them is more difficult and deadlier than any previous terrain. To succeed, players must distribute their available resources and equipment correctly since the permadeath design means there are no second attempts to win (and you can forget about learning a route since each terrain is uniquely generated at the start of the game.)

As players cope with unknown dangers, react spontaneously to unpredictable events, Insurmountable attempts to make players realize that, as in life, it is not always possible to foresee the consequences of particular actions, which leads to new situations players must deal with instantly. Intriguingly, this approach to game design makes every new game noticeable different.

Insurmountable is developed by German developer Byterockers Games and will be self-published on Steam. The game launches on April 29. A promotional discount will be running until May 6 allowing aspiring mountain climbers to buy the game for $18/€18/£18 (regular $20/€20/£20.)
