February 18, 2021 — 30XX catchy music is a perfect fit for the game’s familiar yet novel gameplay; run-left-to-right, jump, shoot and slice through themed 2D platforming worlds.
30XX is a procedurally generated Mega Man tribute that features a retro-sounding chip-tune soundtrack. Developed by Batterystaple Games, 30XX has quickly become popular since it left Steam Early Access on February 17. The game’s soundtrack consists of 22 catchy retro tunes composed by Atlanta-based artist Brandon Ellis who goes under the artist name Cityfires. Ellis has previously composed game music for 20XX and Catlateral Damage.
30XX has been especially applauded for its easy-to-use level editor and precise and responsive controls which has led to commercial success on Steam. This is a rare feat considering console-style retro platformers tend to struggle on the digital game store as they are almost always unable to attract a large enough fanbase to fund game development. It is a little-known fact that Steam is a graveyard to hundreds of critically acclaimed platformers with disastrously low sales numbers.
